The next book in Molly O’Keefe’s Boys of Bishop setting, BETWEEN THE SHEETS is the tale of Ty and Shelby, two people, trying to redeem themselves from their pasts to find a new life, together.

This is the playlist for Ty, my hero in BETWEEN THE SHEETS. Ty’s got a lot on his plate dealing with his son and a new life, but he is at heart – utterly a good guy. And his love affair with Shelby baffles him in so many ways, but when he falls, he falls hard. And this playlist is sort of the progression of his feelings.

Songs for Ty

1.  Do I Wanna Know? -The Arctic Monkeys

After they get over their initial animosity towards each other, he’s impossibly intrigued by her, but she does not give him much to go on.

How many secrets can you keep?
‘Cause there’s this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow and I play it on repeat
Until I fall asleep
Spilling drinks on my settee

(Do I wanna know)
If this feeling flows both ways?
(Sad to see you go)
Was sort of hoping that you’d stay
(Baby we both know)
That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can’t say tomorrow day

2.  Stubborn Love- The Lumineers

As Ty slowly starts to understand what Shelby’s all about, his better sense tells him to run, but still he stands there, waiting for her. Because he understands pain better than most.

It’s better to feel pain, than nothing at all
The opposite of love’s indifference
So pay attention now, I’m standing on your porch screaming out
And I won’t leave until you come downstairs

3.  Love Runs Out- One Republic

When Ty decides, he’s in. He’s so in. And he believes that he can love her enough for the both of them. That she will be able to trust him, to love him, to see him.

I’ll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright, in black that’s makin’ you run.
And we’ll feel alright, and we’ll feel alright,
‘Cause we’ll work it out, yes, we’ll work it out.

 4. Say Something- Great Big World

In the big terrible black moment of the book Ty realizes that he can’t love her enough for both of them. She will not let him. Shelby’s been so wounded, it’s possible she may never be able to love and trust another person and he is forced to let her go.

Say something, I’m giving up on you
I’m sorry that I couldn’t get to you
Anywhere I would’ve followed you
Say something, I’m giving up on you

Songs for Shelby

1. Sweet Lorraine – Patty Griffin

Shelby is a tough one. She has a giant ocean of love to give but no courage at hand to give it. The whole book was born listening to “Sweet Lorraine” by Patty Griffin, and I urge you to hunt that song down and listen to it. Here are my favorite lyrics:

In the battle of time in the battle of will
It’s only your hope and your heart that gets killed
And it gets harder and harder Lorraine, to believe in magic
When what came before you is so very tragic
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine

2. Stolen Car – Bruce Springsteen

Readers first meet Shelby in WILD CHILD and in the book she engages in some pretty dangerous and wild behavior in an effort to FEEL SOMETHING. ANYTHING. So that someone will SEE her. And frankly, I’ve been trying NOT to use a thousand Springsteen songs, but this one is just too perfect, about a heartbroken, lonely man who steals cars, trying to get caught – but never does.

And I’m driving a stolen car
On a pitch black night
And I’m telling myself I’m gonna be alright
But I ride by night and I travel in fear
That in this darkness I will disappear

3. Stay With Me – Sam Smith

Shelby and Ty start a relationship that Shelby insists is only physical and she’s blunt and cold, but her real feelings – her terrible loneliness and craving for Ty is just so plain. And this song…holy cow…this is SUCH a song!!

Why am I so emotional?
No, it’s not a good look, gain some self-control
And deep down I know this never works
But you can lay with me so it doesn’t hurt

4. What I Wouldn’t Do – Serena Ryder

Shelby admits to her feelings far later than Ty but when she does, I feel like she’s fierce. And once they’re together, Ty and his son Casey, she’s like this Mama Bear. Finally, all this love has a place to go and it’s amazing.

I’ll carry the weight
I’ll do anything for you
My bones may break
but I’ll never be untrue
Woah-oh-oh Woah
Woah-oh-oh Woah
Woah-oh-oh Woah
Oh what I wouldn’t do
Oh what I wouldn’t do
