Temptation (noun): A desire to do something, esp. something wrong or unwise; i.e., “we gave in to temptation.”
My newest release, Shades Of Temptation, Book 2 in the Special Investigations Group series, has me contemplating the nature of temptation. What makes us long for the things we cannot have or, more accurately, crave things we shouldn’t want? After all, giving in to temptation usually comes hand-in-hand with paying some kind of price, whether it’s to our waistline, pocketbook, self-worth, or moral conscience. Why aren’t the repercussion enough to curb our longing for carbs or bad boys or overpriced shoes or bad boys or margaritas or bad boys…?
Really, the number of things that aren’t good for us are endless. They surround us, if not in real life than at least on the Internet, and therefore we are always reminded of how very, very much we want them.
Even worse, temptation can grow exponentially when we’re struggling with life. It is the brass ring, the greener grass, the promise of something better, even if that something better is fleeting. But even temporary indulgence feels amazing. Think about how good that tiny piece of chocolate tastes as it melts on your tongue…only to leave you craving one more bite…
Books are a fairly tame temptation, though they can be hoarded just like anything else, and often those new releases can be a threat to the pocketbook. Yet…libraries are our saving grace. I love that my books are available in libraries. And how about this for a novel idea—In Colombia, the government might start providing book-borrowing kiosks at bus stops. Waiting for the bus can be a chance to discover a new favorite author.
My TBR shelves are overflowing, but I plan to add more to them before the end of the week. I might never get to all of them, but I’ll always have a book for whatever mood strikes me at any given time. That’s a wonderful feeling. And what can I say? Sometimes the repercussions are worth it.
How about you? What’s your biggest temptation?
