When I first began writing my novel, A SEAL AT HEART, I had to ask myself the question—what makes a hero sexy? To bring clarity to my answer, I drove over to the Amphibious Base in Coronado where the Navy SEALS train and watched the latest BUD/S class run through the Obstacle Course. Yes, these men were excellent specimens of fitness, though they were very young and didn’t have that extra something that would draw me to them.
As my husband climbed the hill and sat down next to me, I saw all too clearly what being a hero is all about. He embodies it. In my opinion a hero has dedication, drive, and a desire to reach his goal, and it is balanced with compassion, passion, and tenderness. There is an ease to being with him that soothes the soul and he brings about the ability to laugh at situations and our own idiosyncrasies. He’s lived life boldly and looks forward to experiencing more. There is the loyalty and love that is obvious in each and every action, even when I’m so mad I could scream the house down. Yes, these qualities make a hero.
Taking the outstretched hand of my husband and being escorted off of the sand bluff and down to the beach for a long romantic walk together before we headed home, I thought about him and all the values he has that I admire. My husband. I write about him in every story, and I am blessed to be his partner in life.
What makes a hero sexy for you? His body? His mind? His heart? All three, or something else? Be explicit and you might win a book.
