Hi, all! I’m Shawntelle Madison and I write quirky, urban fantasy romance novels! Next month, Kept, the next book in my Coveted series will be released from Ballantine. I’m quite excited since I had so much fun writing the book. And the cover! Who doesn’t love to see Paul Marron in action? If you haven’t read the first book, be sure to check out Coveted. It came out this spring and is another cover with Paul.
When I’m not writing, I work as the web developer for the Killion Group, a company that designs book covers for several traditional and e-Book publishers. I’ve been working as a web developer/designer for over ten years now. Since I sit on both sides of the fence as an author and designer, I’ve come to appreciate the process. Designers work so hard with tools like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Whether the composition is digitally painted or created based on a photograph, the covers designed today show how much the romance community has such talented folks working hard to bring our books to life.
So, every month, I’d love to chat with you about romance covers. I plan to have interviews to show how they are made, who the designers behind some of your favorite books are, and which models create the steamiest scenes. Next month, I will feature and interview a cover artist or industry professional who can give you the inside details on the work they do. (Be sure to request a particular artist/industry professional you like!)
This month, there are a lot of fabulous titles coming out. Be sure to check out the list from Romance at Random. Some of the covers that really have caught my eye are Kim Harrison’s INTO THE WOODS (Harper Voyager) and Sherry Thomas’s TEMPTING THE BRIDE (Berkley). Sherry’s cover is so beautiful. The cover designer did a fantastic job with the typography. It fits Sherry’s brand. On the other hand, I love the background for Kim’s book. It sets the dark, ominous mood for her urban fantasy tales. Another great cover this month is Karen Marie Moning’s ICED (Delacorte). The colors are amazing and the title in ice fits perfectly.
What do you think of the style of covers like Sylvia Day’s CROSSFIRE series and Beth Kery’s BECAUSE YOU ARE MINE serial? Both authors have October releases. The covers from those particular series have a similar style which I love. Very classy and sexy. Does it make me want to read the books? Why, yes it does!
There’s so much to talk about and we’ll definitely dive more into books as they come out and feature their covers. Let me know your thoughts!
About the author:
Shawntelle Madison is a web developer who loves to weave words as well as code. She’d never admit it, but if asked she’d say she covets and collects source code. After losing her first summer job detassling corn, Shawntelle performed various jobs—from fast-food clerk to grunt programmer to university webmaster. Writing eccentric characters is her most favorite job of them all. On any particular day when she’s not surgically attached to her computer, she can be found watching cheesy horror movies or the latest action-packed anime. She lives in Missouri with her husband and children.
