The first time I sat down to write the very first book, I knew I’d have at least three. Not because I’m a rabid plotter, I am not, but because a friend of mind who’d worked in a European publishing house told me to write three books. So I did.
Book #1, which became The Seduction of Lady Phoebe, came fast and furious. As if the characters had been waiting for years for me to come to my senses and realize I wanted to write.
Then I ran into a bit of a problem. The characters for the second book, Anna and Rutherford, did not want to talk to me, in fact they were quite happy to let Robert Beaumont, the hero of The Temptation of Lady Serena give me his story. Yet they showed up in Serena all ready married. Finally, as I was editing Serena, the title of book #2, The Secret Life of Anna Marsh, came to me, and once Anna started talking, so did Rutherford. To be frank, he wasn’t at all happy with Anna’s side of the story.
So I had three books, and it was a series. However, in the meantime, some of the secondary characters, most of them men, had been cozying up to my muse, and, as with Robert, some voices were louder and more insistent than others. Nanowrimo was starting, and suddenly I was back in 1814/1815 again, yet Serena takes place in 1816. Instead of keeping that book in the series, I decided to make it the first book of the second series, which I’m calling A Season For Love. Don’t know how my editor will like it.
Fortunately, since then, even though Rupert, Robert Beaumont’s cousin as been jumping up and down to have his own book, my books have come pretty much in order. Of course that wasn’t terribly difficult, I had three more gentlemen to appease, other than Rupert, who is too young, so it really didn’t matter which book came next. Except during Nano.
Last year, when I should have been working on book #4, I wrote the second book in A Season for Love.
I’d dutifully started book #6, when I had to stop to write a Christmas novella for 2014. It’s about Georges and Madeleine, who appeared as secondary characters in The Secret Life of Miss Anna Marsh.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to write the next two books in order. Oh wait a moment. My muse just reminded me I’m supposed to write a Christmas novel for 2015, and it might be a prequel to the second series. Oh well, that’s sort of in order.
