My romance-loving friends and I debate all the time over which kind of leading man is more alluring. While I tend to veer toward the alpha just about every time, I do love the teasing sensual seducer as well. Let’s do a little compare/contrast, shall we? First, our seducer has patience. Our alpha clearly doesn’t even know the definition of the word. The alpha has one goal—her—and he wants her now. No bed required—a good, sturdy wall will do (or desk, pool table, whatever). On the other hand, the seducer is a master of the art of seduction, savoring the slow, tantalizing love-play. For he knows that her surrender will make the reward even more sweet. Another trait our seducer has is charm. Within the seducer’s arsenal of charm is his bone-melting, heart-stopping smile as … Continued
I am a new Melissa de la Cruz convert. As you already know, I recap the weekly Lifetime series, Witches of East End which is based on her books about the Beauchamp family; now I have a new de la Cruz series to follow. Vampires of Manhattan is a spin off of de la Cruz’s YA series, Blue Bloods. Since I am not a big reader of all things Young Adult, I will admit to not being completely familiar with that series. Have no fear; de la Cruz does an excellent job getting me up to speed. I was able to glean enough back-story about each main player in this series to make me, a newbie, feel right at home. I am a huge paranormal fan. Not all paranormal is created equal. The world-building necessary … Continued
It’s the age-old tale of angels versus demons, but forget the usual stuff about their rift because Jeaniene Frost is switching things up in The Beautiful Ashes. Curious? Since I’ve been fortunate enough to snag an ARC, I’m giving you a quick lowdown on Ivy and Adrian’s story. The rest you just have to read for yourself. Let’s start with the romance: what you’ll find in The Beautiful Ashes is the forbidden sort as Ivy and Adrian’s lineage has been at odds with each other for centuries. Now I wouldn’t necessarily call it insta-love because they said the L-word towards the end but if we are to follow the timeline, Ivy and Adrian did fall for each other sooner rather than later. That said, I didn’t find this story to be driven by the romance, … Continued
I’ve never hidden the fact that in the realm of paranormal romances, I’m a shifter girl, not a fang banger. In the romance realm, I am also a lover of all things Highlander and let me just interject, what a wonderful time it is to be a lover of the Highlanders! A HIGHLANDER’S OBSESSION is the best of both worlds. Set in modern times, there is a definite throwback feel when exploring the mores of the castle/bed and breakfast inhabitants. In fact, Creighton Matheson is the laird of the land. He’s the first born son in an area that places huge value on first born sons but there is also a curse settled on these fellas, and it never ends well. As I mentioned, this is a shifter book but I am not going to … Continued
Dark Skye is the story of ill-fated childhood best friends, Thronos and Lanthe. Thronos is royalty in his Vrekener clan. A real life prince of a winged warrior. Vrekeners reside in the secluded floating city of Skye Hall. It is far above the clouds, heaven of sorts and the residents live a life of austere moderation to say the least. No impure thoughts, no pre-marital sex, no drinking, no dancing, no flashy clothes, no thinking outside the box. Self control to the most excruciating degree. Lanthe is Queen of Persuasion, royalty of the Sorceri. Sorceri worship gold, live in the moment, and are carousing, wanton sexual beings. Sorceri are the night to Vrekener day but Lanthe is fated to be Thronos’ light. Oh yeah, family feuds, beheadings, 500 year pursuits, and deeply seated opposing positions … Continued
I will admit it, freely and openly: I love a good paranormal romance. But when it comes to paranormal, suspension of disbelief is vital. Many authors have tried, but not all have succeeded in coaxing me into the headspace necessary to fall into the story they create. In paranormal, another key is world-building; Kresley Cole accomplishes this flawlessly. Her Immortals After Dark series is one of the most engaging, tightly focused, thoroughly consistent paranormal series out there. This is not a small task. Keeping your world building consistent across a huge laundry list of books is exceptionally difficult; I can’t even imagine the flow chart Ms. Cole has for this series. Cole manages to introduce new characters, new situations and new drama without neglecting the core of the series. With the fourteenth book in the … Continued
Discover Cecy Robson’s sensational Weird Girls series—or return to where the magic first began—with this eBook original prequel novella about four sisters coming to grips with their unique supernatural powers. Celia Wird shouldn’t possess the ability to transform into a tigress. Her three sisters should never be able to burst into flames, heal wounds, or transform common objects into deadly weapons. And yet they do. Before they were born, the Wird Sisters were cursed by a spell that was intended to destroy them, not endow them with extraordinary powers. The sisters’ magic is untamed and explosive at best, and time is running out for them to take command. Vampires have targeted Celia’s sweet, tragically human ex-boyfriend Danny. The sisters rush to his aid, but in order to take down the vamps, first they must face … Continued
Kate Serine’s Transplanted Tales is my favorite fairy tale-inspired series. The series gist is very similar to the TV show Once Upon a Time: a rift happens, and our beloved characters from lores, legends, myths, and tales of old are transplanted to our world. Some have managed to stay true to their characters as they were in the tales, some are almost unrecognizable, while others managed to do both like the heroes and heroines of each installment. Ever After is book four of the series. The hero is Gideon, whom we’ve met in the earlier books, a loyal Unseelie guard to the royal fae family, and his lady love, Arabella aka Robin Hood. I was one of those fans who immediately took an immediate liking to Gideon in book two, The Better to See You, … Continued
Larissa Ione, EMT and meteorologist, is author of the New York Times bestselling Demonica series, and is half of the Sydney Croft writing duo. Larissa first met Shiloh Walker online. Then they met in person, possibly in a bar, which they won’t confirm or deny. They hit it off right away and enjoy their friendship—as long as they avoid talking about the medical field, where they both worked and have very definite and sometimes different opinions about the players in the profession. But that’s okay, because there’s plenty of other stuff to talk about, including a love of things spooky, things paranormal, and all things books—the edgier the better. Larissa’s latest book, Azagoth, is a June release. Larissa: Okay, so in Deeper Than Need Trinity jumps from the proverbial frying pan into the fire. With … Continued

Sophia is back in Lori Adams’s next installment, AWAKEN, book two in the hot New Adult series of paranormal romance—the Soulkeepers— I think one of my favorite parts of this book is the paintball scene — have you ever played that game? Paintball – it’s a riot! Dressed in fatigues you’re part of one of two teams and you run around like a crazy person with a paintball gun and try to kill/paint-splatter the enemy — and yes it is seriously messy. The fun part about this scene is that Sophia and Michael have a strong bond, in many different ways (I can’t tell you too much!) and the closer they are physically the stronger their heartbeats become . . . for one another — isn’t that romantic!!! Love, LOVE, love this series – So, … Continued
Stories abound these days that include the apocalypse; either the hero and heroine avert it, survive it, or in some cases, cause it. That theme has been one which has fascinated us since the dawning of civilization, we have wondered how our story would end. I admit that I have always been quite captivated with end of the world scenarios. There are a ton of books and movies which examine how society and people would function; The Hunger Games, The Walking Dead, and Revolution are prime examples. At its heart, each of these stories removes all human artifice and brings what is truly important to the forefront. I like the issues that are examined. If the world ended, does society still exist, does civilization? What matters in the apocalypse? Is it the people you surround … Continued

Making Myths Plausible We grow up hearing about myths and legends without even realizing what they are. Everything from Little Red Riding Hood to the Greek tales of gods and demi-gods to King Arthur and Robin Hood and even the more modern urban legends like Bloody Mary. By the time we are old enough to analyze the stories at school they have become part of us and we have absorbed their lessons. The oldest stories were morality tales and warnings given to society through entertainment (this still happens as TV and movies reinforce society’s values: like violence is fine but naked bodies OMG!). Urban legends reinforce fear of the unknown something which humans are still primed to feel, but they also become rites of passage for teens. When started writing paranormal romance I wanted people … Continued

Barnes & Noble buyer Jules Herbert is a driving force behind the excellent selection in Barnes & Noble’s romance section. Here’s his list of recommendations for the month of July:
In this pulse-pounding and thrillingly sensual novel, New York Times bestselling author Lara Adrian returns to the mesmerizing world of the Midnight Breed, following new characters into a dark future where an uneasy peace can unravel into war—and a great betrayal can mask an all-consuming love. Twenty years after the terror of First Dawn—when mankind learned that vampires lived secretly among them—the threat of violence reigns as the two species struggle to coexist. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. And in this precarious world of torn loyalties and shattered trust, Mira, a fiery squad captain, finds that every fight bears an intensely personal cost.

Becoming a published author has been a total dream come true. I never in a million years thought that I’d be working on my first book series, let alone my third! When I started this journey, I didn’t know much about the publishing industry as a whole and I knew even less about the romance publishing industry. To be very honest, until I tried to get my first book published I didn’t know there was much of a difference. I’m not proud of it but it’s the truth. So here are the Top 10 things that surprised me the most about the romance writing/publishing industry.
